*JOB CATEGORY: *Interpreter
*SUMMARY:* The primary role of the Educational Interpreter is to facilitate communication among Deaf and hard-of-hearing students and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system. The Educational Interpreter provides interpreting and support services to Deaf and hard-of-hearing students in the school district.
*RESPONSIBILITIES:*
The primary role of the educational interpreter is to serve as a facilitator of communication – to interpret.
1. Provides expressive and voice interpreting for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in classes (this may include American Sign Language, manually coded English, Pidgin Signed English, and/or Oral Interpreting).
2. Under the supervision of the classroom teacher, provides tutoring services as necessary for deaf and hard-of-hearing students when it does not interfere with the task of interpreting.
3. Assists with the setup of note-taking services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students when necessary.
4. Participates in educational team activities either in person or via a report. Activities may include team meetings, Individual Education Plan conferences, Multi-disciplinary Team meetings, and/or Collaborative Student Intervention Team meetings. Input from the interpreter may involve information regarding communication strategies and progress related to the child’s use of the interpreter.
5. Serves as a liaison to promote good public relations between the deaf and hard-of-hearing students, hearing peers, staff, and faculty members.
6. Leads or assist in providing lessons to hearing students, staff, and parents as requested in regards to sign language, deafness, deaf culture, interpreting, and consumer education.
7. Provides interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom, extracurricular activities, and parent meetings when necessary. Interpreting services provided outside of normal school hours would be compensated accordingly.
8. Performs other duties assigned by the principal when this does not conflict with the primary responsibility of interpreting.
9. At times, when it does not interfere with their service as interpreters, educational interpreters may volunteer or be asked by the teacher to assist with some of the more routine classroom duties.
10. Uses scheduled preparation time to preview materials, conference with teachers, record data in logs, research signs, plan sign classes, etc.
11. Maintains professional standards as delineated in the Code of Ethics of the national Registry of interpreters for the Deaf. (see altered Code for Educational Interpreters)
12. Other duties as assigned.
*SKILLS:*
Technical: Interpreters language or mode of sign communication used by the student ranges along a sign continuum including American Sign Language (ASL), English-based signs, sign supported speech, and other visual communication techniques used by students who are Deaf and hard of hearing.
Interpersonal: Effective communication skills, collaboration with staff, professionalism, confidentiality and regular attendance are essential to the interpreter role.

*QUALIFICATIONS:*
*1. Education:*
Required –
-Interpreter training program certificate from an accredited 2- or 4-year college or university. The program shall include the following coursework: English to American Sign Language interpretation, American Sign Language to English interpretation, Transliterating and oral interpreting, Current practices for interpreters in educational settings, Ethical practices as it relates to interpreters.
-Completed a practicum of at least 150 hours in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 12 with a licensed educational interpreter assigned as a mentor.
-Passing score on the written and educational interpreter performance assessment (EIPA), set by the state superintendent in consultation with the state superintendent’s advisory council on deaf and hard of hearing programs. Current passing score for the EIPA performance is 3.3.
*2. Experience:*
a. Required – None
b. Preferred – Previous experience with interpreting in an educational setting is preferred.
*3. Certification: DPI Educational Interpreter license*
